Crime, Culture and the City on Spotify

There is now a playlist on spotify that 'fits the mood' of the module, and provides sounds for each of the eras covered in the lectures (and it includes Roy Ayers, above). You must register with spotify to access this.

Les 4000

Just to let you know that the picture to the right is of a public housing estate known as 'Les 4000' in La Courneuve which is situated on the periphery (or banlieues) of Paris. I visited the site a couple of weeks ago as part of my British Academy project on racism and multiculture on the edge. My colleague David Garbin and I have conducted a number of interview with residents living here. The gaps or holes in the building were actually 'cut out' because the block cast too great a shadow and was thus considered too depressing. The families who lived in the gaps had to be relocated...

Does this thing work?

If you studied Crime, Culture and the City this term then I hope you enjoyed the module and learned something new. If you are thinking of taking this option in the Spring term 2009/10 then the topics of study are: Film Noir, Urban Outcasts, Graffiti and Hip-Hop, the Dual City and the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center. I may even throw in a session on the 70s and 'Blaxploitation'- I haven't decided yet.
